Scholarships

Several annual scholarships are designated for environmental studies department majors. Funding is primarily from community businesses and donated through the UNLV Foundation.

Eligibility
Criteria used in the selection of students for program scholarships vary depending on the award. All students must be declared environmental studies majors.

  1. GPA 2.75 or above
  2. Full time student status
  3. Nevada residency (some)
  4. Financial need (some)
  5. Specific area of specialization (some)

In addition, any student who accepts a program scholarship must write a letter to the donor expressing their appreciation for the award to be considered for any further scholarships.

When several students qualify equally for the same award, their community service and level of participation in program activities are considered. Watch the bulletin board in the environmental studies office (CDC 701 A) for opportunities to become involved.

How to Apply
Complete a general scholarship application form available from Financial Aid & Scholarships, located in the Student Services Complex (Reynolds Student Services Center) room 230. New forms are available in December of each year with a priority deadline of February 1. However, applications are accepted throughout the year.

Scholarship applicants are also encouraged to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to be considered for scholarships that include financial need as a criteria. FAFSA forms are available each December from Financial Aid & Scholarships.

The Award Process
Most funding for environmental studies scholarships is generated from Earth Day activities. (Participation in these activities enhances your chances of award.) Therefore awards for the upcoming academic year are not made until late July or early August. Award recipients are notified by the environmental studies chair in a letter at the time the award is made, and formally recognized at the Honor's Convocation Program held each year in April.

Miscellaneous program scholarship funds can become available at any time during the academic year. It is our policy to award funds as they are donated. These additional opportunities will be posted on the bulletin board in the environmental studies office (CDC 701 A). Check the bulletin board frequently and let us know if you would like to be considered for any of the offered scholarships.

Please note: you must have a scholarship application on file at Financial Aid & Scholarships to qualify for any program award. Applications are accepted all year in Financial Aid & Scholarships, however early filing gives you a better chance of competing for other university wide scholarships.
